I seem to have visited almost all notable hotdog joints in Singapore, and I'm thinking if I should go into trying out all the different brands of frozen and chilled sausages that are on sale in the supermarket, then perhaps come to a conclusion which brand of sausages is the best. haha~

Anyway, the highlight today isn't sausages, which is quite a surprise. Today I'd like to introduce my beloved cake knife!

I had a normal knife and my cake knife cut each of my hotdog buns, and look at the vast different in the texture of the cut.

The one with the normal kitchen knife has a very coarse texture at the cut lines, as shown in the top left hand picture, which the cake knife sliced the bread so smoothly seen in the top right hand corner. Yup, that's my cake knife there~

Erm, even though the cake knife does very beautiful cutting, I seldom use it. I seldom have the chance to cut breads and cakes, and most of the times cutting cakes we use the plastice free knifes rather than my more professional cake knife, I don't know why. Perhaps maybe probably is because the plastic knife can be thrown away after using and need not undergo the tedious process of washing. haha~

Oh, and I'll be heading to Sarawak tomorrow so I won't be blogging next week, but I don't think I'll be missed since my blogging pace and slowed down a great deal. If you want to look at more food and/or you miss me too much, here's my food post on my CNY dinners, V Day dinner, meals in Malacca. They do no charge GST but do charge the usual service charge, so it might be a little pull factor to some people. As the name suggests, the specialities are stews, and more central european type of food. I went for the German styled cheese sausage for the sake of this blog.

Sadly to say, my sausage wasn't as wonderful as I hoped for, but I don't know if that's my fault or not. I think I might have spent too much time taking these food pictures, and because I was sitting under the air conditioner, and also more so because I ate the mash first, when I ate the sausage, it ended up cold and the cheese was clumpy and not oozy.

Forest Mushroom Soup $4, Cheese Sausage $9.50, Hungarian Beef Goulash $16.40 (I think), and root beer which I can't remember the price.

The mushroom soup was really good, though it had a thick layer of olive oil (I think) on top of it, but it added a lot of flavour to the soup. The mushrooms were finely chopped and velvety but also had some slices for a decent bite. The second best mushroom soup I've had in recent months, second only to the Ritz-Carlton one which had truffle oil instead of olive oil, haha. And do try out the Goulash, all the stews came on a hotpot with a flame burning under, the flame is something large than your normal tea lights, so it's really hot.

Although the place was not packed, it must disclaim that we were there on a weekday night. Also, while we were there, quite a few people came by with take away orders, so I guess that place must be really popular among those living around the area. *cross fingers* that I get a bike real soon, then I'll be checking out more eateries around my backyard.

Wiener Flower

How to make Gerbera-like wiener flowers
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_6Ad0POlhDHE/R5I2v4hkoDI/AAAAAAAAAY0/gGoOSGY3QFg/s400/flowerw_finished.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157244719547588658" />

I thought this looks really cute. Haha... They incidentally do feature a sausage in their menu, the German Suasage, grilled and served on on a hotplate with two potato wedges.

Waraku's German Sausage.

It was actually supposed to be an ordinary meal, I thought, without any sausages, because it was a Japanese restaurant. But the moment I saw sausages on the menu, I sausage radar went *ding ding ding*, and I knew I just had to order this if not for the sake of this blog. The picture of the sausage did look appetising and didn't have the look of cheap sausages that I can get off NTUC or Cold Storage.

It came in a sizzling hotplate and looked very much like the one in the picture, which was wonderful. You can't see that properly, but the sausage is one long sausage curved around the perimeter of the hotplate, so it's really long. Although I usually dislike ketchup on sausages and I abhor already topped condiments (other than mustard), after eating this German Sausage, I knew why the Japanese never questioned their chefs, this wasn't just ketchup, but a house mixed sauce, and it was good. The sweet tangy taste and the charred porky taste went very well together with the little bit of savoury gravy at the bottom of the hotplate. Nice~

Our full meal, a pork katsu with rice and soba, miso ramen, chicken karaage, miso seafood udon, seafood udon, german sausage, cheese salmon, five little ice creams, macha ice cream.

Not surprisingly, the sides were much more interesting than the mains.

House Made from Sausages

Meat House

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_6Ad0POlhDHE/R4Xlu4hkoBI/AAAAAAAAAYk/ELvuo3zwayc/s400/meat_house_006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153777942205341714" />
A roast house, made entirely from meat. They even made a lawn and a little sausage car parked on the lawn too~

PS: Link edited, do click on the edited link, it's the original one~

Joan Cooked Sausages 4

Cheese sausage with extra slice of cheddar, asparagus, topped with mustard on a slice of bread.

I love sausages. But eating only sausages is not really that balanced a diet. I'm not really that anal on having a balanced diet, but recently I've been trying to lead a healthier lifestyle, hence I started pondering over what type of greens go well with sausages to make a hotdog a balance meal on its own.

I've tried the most common lettuce, and I thought it didn't go well with each other. Lettuce goes best with bacon, with all the oil and fats. I tried cucumbers, the second most common type of greens, but well, it felt too cool that it was just weird. I think cucumbers go best with cold cuts. I decided to experiment with asparagus because I know of dishes with asparagus and the light taste in asparagus can bring out stronger tastes of its mains, and the result was just marvelous. I've henceforth decided that the best pairing of sausages and greens is the greens of asparagus.

It's nice and crunchy, yet not overpowering even though there's a hint of vegetable taste. And the asparagus goes well with mustard, the choice topping of sausages. Mustard don't go well with the raw greens.

Okay, another thing I'd like to introduce today in this entry is the Fairprice cheese sausages. I don't like them. This sausage is more like cheese Taiwan Sausage rather than cheese sausage. I've had them before and always thought that there's this sweet taste of it that irks me. Yes, I have a strong dislike for Taiwan Sausages because I have strong dislike for sweet stuffs on supposedly savoury stuffs.

After checking the ingredients list, indeed sugar was listed as one of the ingredients, and it was listed before salt. Meaning, there's more sugar in that sausage than salt, which is what I prefer.

Western Food 85

Grilled Bratwurst $5.50, Dutch Smoked Sausage $6.00, and other western food such as pork chops and pork knuckles at hawker centre prices, found at Blk 85 Fengshan Market, around Bedok North there, famously known as the Bak Chor Mee place. This stall Western Food 85 is at #01-257, it is also well known for its curry rice, on top of the western food.

My dad got this recommendation from his friend, who gave him the address and told him that the German pork knuckles sold there is cheap and good, and authentic. Hence we trotted down to see what more than Bak Chor Mee can Blk 85 offer us. And my god, was the pork knuckles really good considering it's price. But this is my sausage blog, so I'll be talking about the sausages instead.

The grilled bratwurst is not home made, so the standard is about average. What wow-ed me was the chargrill-ness it was, nicely done, not overburnt but having that charredness there. The fries and coleslaw are but normal. Overall, a normal dish at very low prices. Think for the price itself, it's well worth the trip down. The Dutch Smoked Sausage isn't quite Dutch, but is has a hammie smoked flavour which reminded me kind of like the ham in luncheon meat, not that it's a bad thing, really. What was missing was the mustard sauce, I need to have my own supply with me the next time I pop by there.

Still, I think the most should-order dish is the pork knuckles, it's really cheap there compared to other German restaurants. And it's nicely carved up for easy eating. And it's really well done.

Merry Christmas

My dear sister emailed this to me this morning, or maybe last night.
Merry Sausage Christmas and a Happy New Sausage Year.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_6Ad0POlhDHE/R3C15ohkoAI/AAAAAAAAAYc/Byvl-he0riw/s400/Sausage_Xmas.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5147814375819878402" />

I'm aware that I'm not blogging as often as I should be, but this the holiday season, and I'm eating mostly turkey and ham, not much sausages. I bought this at the Suntec branch.

I've tried them once before, and thought it was quite a decent bite, more like a quick snack. It's normal, plain, quick, decent, no complains there. But it's also because there's nothing exceptional about it, or special, or different, there's also nothing to shout about.

I had the cheese hotdog this time round and it's a tad bit better than the plain chicken sausage. The cheese is oozy and abundant as you can see in the lower right corner. One thing interesting about this stall is that it has common condiments for you to squeeze yourself, but the condiments aren't in bottles. There's this udder like structure with tubes (udders) for you to squeeze out the condiment you want, and your preferred amount of it. It's like squeezing udder, or phallus, or erm, erm... ya...

Auntie Anne's

Pretzel Dog at $3.10 from Auntie Anne's Parkway Parade branch. A long string of pretzel, rather than rolled up into a pretzel shape is rolled and wrapped around a chicken hotdog.

I've only eaten Auntie Anne's pretzels a couple of times when I was in secondary school, had the pretzel dog another time, and this is the second time I'm eating the pretzel dog. It's just as how I remembered it. Salty pretzel, with juicy sausage within. It's denser than a normal hotdog bun, but the hotdog taste is stronger due to the high density, lower volume of the dough part.

I'm not a fan of pretzels, or American-styled pretzels. I'm more used to the German style Bretzel, which are fluffier, bigger, and more like bread. In fact, to me a Bretzel is something very Germanic. It's like all German bakeries use the Bretzel shape to indicate that they are a bakery. Werner's Oven and the Swiss Backerei both have the Bretzel as their logo. But even with the standard German bread, and the Germans being most famous for their sausages, couldn't come up with a pretzel dog.

Coffee Club

Bangers and Mash from Siglap's Coffee Club at $11.50 +10% service charge +7% GST. Includes three cuts of sausages, a chicken one, a cheese one, and a coarse cut banger, comes with a side of mash potatoes and half a grilled tomato.

This marked the first day of my vacation. I woke up late, took a sunny stroll down to lazy Siglap for a relaxed lunch, my absolute dream vacation. But of course, I'm still busy, I had to go down to school today to do some stuff, then I still have driving, then I still have other appointments. But well, that's not the topic for today.

I was a bit skeptical when I saw the menu, Bangers and Mash didn't sound that much delicious, and at a steal at $11.50, my expectations were low. But when the food came, oh wow~ The sausages were decent in size, looked nicely grilled, and the portion was just right. There were three sausages, a chicken one, which was more like a normal American hotdog, or a Wiener; a cheese one, which was really yummy and the cheese nice and oozey; and a coarse meat banger which was nice and meaty, but I ate that last and was feeling rather filled so I thought it was rather dry and too meaty because it was one fat sausage.

For the sides, the tomato was nicely grilled yet juicy. And the mash potato had chunks of potato inside, so there was a good bite of potatoey flavour. The mash sauce was also really good and went well with the mash and the sausages. For the price, it's value for money. But of course, these sausages mustn't be compared to the German restaurants of Brotzeit, Werner's, and Paulaner because these aren't self made sausages.

It's still great for a lazy late afternoon lunch though.

Breaded Hotdog

Breaded Hotdog from Cathay Cineplex AMK Hub, $4.90 (I think).

This is one of the nicest food to go with a movie because it's so yummy, so easy, so convenient. I first had it when I went to AMK Hub to watch a movie, then I tried to find it in other Cathay Cineplexes, but I hadn't seen it anywhere. I even tried to replicate it at home, to not quite satisfactory results. It was edible, just that the breadcrumbs part was a bit over so it was tough to chew. So it was to my delight that the next visit to AMK's Cathay I found this little bite again.

I'm not so sure if this item is exclusive to AMK, but with my exams finally over, I'm sure to check out more movies and eat more cinema snacks and find out if this is sold in other Cathays. Yup, now that I'm done with the exams, I'm back eating out. Soon I'll be able to clock in more sausagey entries.

An Eating Disorder and an SMS

This is just a short note to say that I'm still alive, I've one more paper to go, so continue to wish me the best for my exams. Thank you very much. This afternoon, my sister sent me a hotdog related SMS from Taiwan. On a food-related but not hotdog-related note, I'm suffering from a Bizarre Eating Habit (click on the link to learn more).

My sister's currently in Taiwan on a 3-week immersion programme. Out of the blue she sent me this SMS this afternoon:
"At shihlin, there's black sausages, sausages with a huge bone as stick, and sausages as big as my arm. and no, i'm not taking pic :)"
wahahaha~
How can she not take pictures?!!

Then while I was surfing the net just now, I came across this website about bizarre eating habits and saw one which I thought sounded a bit like me.
3. Autosarcophagy
This is the disorder of self-cannibalism. It is categorized as pica (disorders relating to consumption of things that should not be consumed). Some people will engage in self-cannibalism as an extreme form of body modification, for example eating their own skin. Others will drink their own blood, a practice called autovampirism.

Erm, no, I'm not that extreme, but I do take great pleasure in eating the peeled skin of my lips. I'd peel them out in pieces and eat them up. Sometimes I'd eat the skin I peeled out from my finger, but I prefer the skin of my lips. Another thing I used to enjoy but not too much recently is to suck my nails. When my nails crack, I'd lick and suck them to wet and soften it, then peel them out and put them in my mouth to suck. I won't swallow them la, just suck until it's really soft then spit it out. I once sucked a piece of nail from my thumb for a couple of days, I'd put it by my pillow before I sleep and continue sucking it when I woke up. But now I don't do that anymore la. Now I only eat the skin of my lips.

Okay, it sounds a bit gross, well, there are more gross stuff but we'll leave those for another day. It's back to Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler and Franco for now.

Movies and Hotdogs at Cathay

Jumbo Hotdog Combo with coke from the Cathay cineplexes, $7. A Jumbo Hotdog alone costs $4.80.

Other than hotdogs, I love to watch movies. And one of the best part about going to watch a film, is to eat hotdogs. So much so that I plan my movie trips when I have cravings and where the hotdogs are good. I prefer the hotdogs from Cathay as compared to the other cinemas. Cathay's hotdogs have a smaller piece of bread, or a larger piece of hotdog whichever way you want to look at things. I don't like bread that much and I love my hotdogs, so this is the hotdog for me.

But what I like most is the melted cheese on top of the hotdog. Doesn't it look just so inviting? I was eating it and almost gagging as I watched the comedy Wo ist Fred.

I'll see when I trot down to other cinemas and do a corresponding review on the hotdogs there, but it won't be that soon. Exams are coming, and Joan is stuck at home studying and eating potato chips for breakfast lunch and dinner, so apologies ahead in the coming weeks when posts become rather scarce. Jiayou to all having exams!

Taiwan Shihlin Street Snacks

Sausage Cheese Egg Crepe, $3.20 from the outlet at The Cathay.

I was feeling a bit mouth itchy, and I had time to waste while waiting for my friends to arrive. Sitting at the basement where all the food are, and remembering that I had this blog to maintain, I decided to grab a little bite at Shihlin. This little bite didn't come in cheap. The portion was a little small, but I needn't that much, just that the price tag was a bit unjustified.

My previous visits to Shihlin all ended up in disappointments because the food just too spicy. I even tried to had them go easy on the spice, but it was still too spicy. It's quite a pity because I thought that the food was good despite not being able to tahan the spice. Well, this crepe being a non-spicy item was something I pretty much enjoyed. Yes, it was good~

There were enough sausages and cheese, and the crepe was fragrant with the scent of fried eggs. The sauce added a bit flavour to the entire package. Just that there was some weird vegetables which I don't know what it is inside the crepe. The flavour was not overpowering but it did added crunch to the crepe. The only gripe, the corriander. I hate corrianders. Even by removing it from the crepe, that piece of crepe which housed the corriander still reeked of corriander taste.

In all, it's not bad. But I'll only get it again when I'm feeling a bit rich. haha~

Hotbake Again

Remember the Hotbake Machine? I promised to review it again, when there's the Hotdog Melt featured. Presenting, Outback BBQ Hotdog Melt...

Outback BBQ Hotdog Melt, a sandwich consisting of hotdogs, cheese, BBQ sauce and pineapple bits, $2 only. The one at the right bottom is a Pepperoni Melt which also included a bit of hotdog slices, $2.50 if you buy it separately but $4 for both sandwiches.

There's a ton more hotdog slices in this sandwich as compared to the one I featured earlier, but I think there has been a slide in quality of sandwiches since last semester. The sandwiches now have lesser filling, and the fillings are concentrated too much in the centre. The sides are just plain bread, which gets a bit frustrating because I want to eat the sandwiches for the fillings and not for the bread.

On the whole, discounting the fact that there's too much bread, this is one yummy filling for a sandwich. The sauce is tangy enough and the meat is good, I mean, you can't go wrong with sausages, right? There's quite a lot of fillings in the centre of the sandwich, so with each bite, there's a meaty punch in there.

Food For Thought

Big Breakfast ($10.90, no extra charges for taxes) from the All Day Breakfast menu from Food For Thought. Big Breakfast includes toast and butter, eggs, snail sausage and salad. My friends had the bratwurst and spicy sausage sandwich.

Food for Thought is this quaint little cafe somewhere near the National Library. I really like its ambience and the decor, and I thought that that mission is really cool. Do check out their website!

Foodwise, I like the concept of their sandwich sets, and the variety of sandwiches, and quality of it is really great. The sad thing is that other than sandwiches there's really nothing much left to choose. The soups they claimed are supposed to be very healthy, with no cream added to the mushroom soup, but somehow, maybe it's just me, I would prefer something unhealthy, something with cream. haha~ But I enjoyed the salad quite a good deal depsite me not being a salad person. The dressing was tasty and the vegetables were fresh.

More importantly is the sausage. I had the snail sausage with my breakfast set and my god was it good. There was the smokey taste of a smoked sausage, but it was nicely grilled that the insides were juicy. When the sausage was unravelled from its snail shape, it was really long. The breakfast set is very value for money as it is extremely filling. But the fillings might be due to the four pieces of toast which I thought was way way too much. Maybe two pieces would have been more than enough.

According to my friends, the sausage sandwich was just as good and get the set to share, it'll be much cheaper. I'd like to go back there and try the sandwiches the next time.

Ikoi

Surprised to see the name of the famous Japanese buffet restaurant on a sausage blog like mine? Introducing the sausages of Ikoi...

Grilled Cocktail Bacon Rolls, included in the buffet spread. Total cost of buffet $35, but well, you get unlimited amounts of sashimi, grilled stuff, tempura, sushi, and lots more other Japanese food.

This cocktail rolls are one of the best I've had, it was grilled to perfection. The sausage oozed out nice yummy bacon fats juices but was also crisp and crunchy, mixed together sausage and bacon was heavenly. Even my friends loved it so much that we ordered many seconds of this. The only thing that I ordered more was the salmon sashimi. haha~

There's also the seafood roll, which is a crabstick wrapped with bacon. It's not as nice as the cocktail roll. I was popping the whole thing into my mouth to absord the most out of the bacon and the sausage. Other must try items from Ikoi would be the sashimi and the other grilled stuff, especially the grilled salmon.

For the $35 price tag, we ate till we were so stuff, and it was sure worth the price. Extremely value for money.

McDonald's Pseudo-Sausage

McDonald's Sausage, seen here alone and in a Sausage Egg McMuffin.

Ever since I set up this blog, my sister has been bugging me to feature McDonald's sausage, but I never thought their sausage is considered sausage even though they named it as sausage. So even though I eat it regularly, this is my first time featuring it.

The sausage is featured in the Big Breakfast, Hotcakes with Sausage, Sausage McMuffin, and the Sausage McMuffin with Egg. I usually have the Big Breakfast when I have McDonald's breakfast, but occasionally when I'm cravvy for cheese, I'll go for the Sausage Egg McMuffin. Once in a while when I have cravings for pancakes, then it'd be the Hotcakes with Sausage. In a way, yes, I love McDonald's sausages even though I don't think it can really be called a sausage.

Anyway, I like to eat can already. haha~

Botak Jones Revisited

This the second time heading down to Botak Jones for sausages for this blog. You can see the other review here.

Swanky Franky set from Botak Jones Clementi at $10.

Let's just say that this didn't go well into my stomach. I felt queasy and a bit of heartburn after the meal. Someone, who had a Botak Burger, came down with food poisoning the next day. I guess this spells the end of my Botak Jones escapades.

The meal itself when eating wasn't too bad. Swanky Franky was a chicken frank wrapped with two slices of bacon and two slices of cheddar melted over it. Of course, there was to be onions but I didn't want it as usual. haha~ It came with the usual fries and coleslaw. It wasn't anything special. I didn't know what I was expecting when I decided to have that, but it turned out to be nothing more than the usual chicken frank just with the aditional toppings. The bacon was badly done somemore. It was grilled but not thoroughly grill, not charred nor crispy, but very fatty.

And with the sickly feeling in the stomach after that, well, guess that's it for Botak Jones. Granted, my usual trips to the Ang Mo Kio branch hadn't made me sick before, so don't know if this is just a one time off thingie.

Swenson's

In celebration of my sister's birthday, we went to Swenson's for dinner.

Because of this blog, I decided upon the chicken frank and giving a pass in trying the new stuff Swenson's had in their new menu.

From top left to bottom right,
Appetisers: Fried Mushrooms, Fried Cheese Sticks
Mains: Sister's Salmon and Mushroom Spaghetti, Daddie's BBQ Chicken, Joan's Chicken Frank, Mother's Fish and Chips, Someone's Chicken and Mushroom Spaghetti
Ice Cream: two Topless Fives, flavours include Lime Sorbet, Mint, Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Mango, Cookies and Cream, Chocolate, Coffee

Because this is essentially a Sausage Blog, I shall not talk about the other food except for my huge Chicken Frank.

Chicken Frank, $12.50 + 10% service charge + 7% GST, served with criss cut fries and coleslaw.

Chicken Franks are the most normal foodstuff about in American eateries, so what makes one chicken frank more outstanding than the other? Other than in terms of individual taste, you can't really go wrong about it, Swenson's made use of toppings of the chicken frank to differentiate their chicken franks. This chicken frank came topped with parmesan cheese, honey mustard, shaved ham and tomato bits. The toasted buns were also buttered. It also came with onions, but I requested for mine to come sans onions.

In all, this differentiation in the chicken frank really impressed me. And for its price, it's still quite value for money.

Hotbake Machine

All Day Breakfast Sandwich, a sandwich which included an omelette with hotdogs, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes, from a Hotbake Machine at NUS Central Library. It's $2.50, but if you take the combo of two different sandwiches, it's $4 for both.

Ever since these sandwich vending machines sprouting out, touting to have freshly toasted sandwiches all day, I've been a fan. Well, at least for the few varieties which I like. Sadly, this All Day Breakfast Sandwich is quite a disappointment. The sandwich itself isn't too bad, it's just that the picture show above and the actual sandwich turned out to be way lot different.

The real one looked like this...

I was disappointed with the hotdogs. The picture showed full long hotdogs on top of the omelette, but in reality, the hotdog was in bits and was in the omelette itself. Nonetheless, I still recommend Hotbake for their vending sandwiches, but another variety instead. One of my favourite's Hotdog Melt, I'll put it up if it's being offered.

Hotdog Earrings

I found a pair of hotdog earring in my bathroom!

I think me and my sister bought them collectively some time ago at some fair thingie, we also bought a pair of some other food stuff, but I don't know where they are now.

Anyway, I took them out to photograph them and wanted to share them in my blog, and possibly also to model the earrings and see how a hotdog would look like on my ear. And then, after I got them out of the little plastic bag thingie holding them, they fell apart. The studs came unglued from the hotdog bit, and now I have two studs with nothing on them, and two little figurines of hotdogs. Thank you very much...

And I can't wear them anymore... Unless I somehow manage to find some strong glue to glue them back. Any suggestions?

Eating Sausages Is Good For You

Being fat is good for you

Health experts continue to bang on about obesity being bad for you, but clearly they haven't spoken to the German man who survived falling from a balcony by landing on his belly.

Gerhard Steiner, 27, was heartily munching on a sausage on his hotel balcolmny in Bayreuth when he lost his balance and toppled over the edge.

Mr Steiner fell more than twenty feet before crashing on to the ground, his fall broken by his ample girth.

Rather than dying like an ordinary mortal, Mr Steiner emerged with just a bruised rib and doctors said his fat has saved him.

So just remember that when you are considering whether to have another deep-fried Mars bar.

***

On the same tone, ever since I've started this blog, I see myself eating more and more sausages and geting fatter and fatter. I've been trying to cut down on my food intake. I forgot the price. erm... Ya, I didn't know how could I but...

It's still a pork diet for me, and I remembered the bratwurst pizza from n.y.d.c was good, we headed there for dinner, and to complete the bratwurst dinner, my friend had the spaghetti and we shared our food. Yay, more food~

But this meal wasn't as spectacular as I hoped it to be. The spaghetti was forgettable, the noddles were soft and too thin, not like al dente spaghetti, I don't even know if it's spaghetti, it looks more like soggy fattened up angelhair pasta. The bratwurst was also too thinly sliced up which didn't pack in a bite. The pizza was better than the spaghetti, but the bratwurst too was too thinly sliced, nothing like what I had at Suntec City before. In all, it was quite a disappointment, but I still like this pizza. It was very cheesy and very garlicky creamy.

After desserts, I was actually quite full but my friend was still unsatisfied which was quite weird because I'm usually the bigger eater, and I ate lesser that night because I was eating slowly. Luckily, dearest Someone prepared some porky stuff for me to barbeque.

Pork Chipolatas, caterpillar cut, looking absolutely glorious.

The first night of the barbeque we had his friends over, but thankfully, the halal friends were a no show in the end, so my porkies were about the share the barbeque grill among with the others. There wasn't a need for the halal friends to be full before I can eat. I was actually getting pretty hungry already.

Barbeque chipolatas taste better than grilled in the toaster oven! Think it's because of all the soot and the grease and the atmosphere of eating with many people. The only grouse was that only one type of sausage was bought, at my fouth chipolata I was feeling the diminishing returns. It would have been better if there were a bit more variety. hmm... Joan's not being indulgent that night. haha~

Cheese Pork Hotdogs, with cheese oozing out, absolutely tantalising.

On the second night, after the friends left, we had a greater leeway do do up our little barbeque. I picked up some cheese pork hotdogs and some hot dog buns.
1: Hotdogs, skewers, buns.
2: Hotdogs skewered.
3: Hotdogs on the barbeque.
4: Blistering hotdogs, slowly being charred.
5: Hotdog with buns, can you see the cheese oozing out?
6: A bite off the hotdog bun, look at the cheese~
7: Spiltted hotdogs with cheese oozing out.
8: A hotdog on its own, look at the charred marks~
9: Bitten by me, look at the cheese~

I had two hotdog with buns, and two without. And I really liked the charred parts on the hotdog, it was cripsy and sooty. The cheese inside a pity wasn't as soft and smooth as I'd have liked it to be. I think it's because I couldn't reach that high a heat for the cheese within the hotdog to be totally molten as the outsides charred. The fire we were using has been started for quite some time as Someone's mother was using it to barbeque before we took it over.

Still it was a wonderful barbeque experience. I've always liked barbequing~ I can't wait to get well soon and barbeque again. This time I want to eat all the things I couldn't eat earlier on.

Joan Cooked Sausages 3

I call this a cheesy bratwurst sandwich.

Just follow the instructions to replicate this delicious cheesy sausage sandwich.

Step 1: Caterpillar cut the sausage.
I wanted to grill it in the little toaster oven so to thoroughly cook it, it's better to caterpillar cut it so that the insides of the sausage can be cooked too.

Step 2: Add more sausages.
Why settle for one when you can have two? Why settle for less when you can have more? haha~ Joan the over indulgent girl speaks out again. Well, actually, no I didn't have both sausages for myself.

Step 3: Add sliced mozzerella on top.
Slice a block of mozzerella and place them on top of the sausages. Ever since I discovered mozzerella came in blocks, I never looked back at the shredded ones anymore. Shredded ones are more air than cheese!

Step 4: Add cheddar.
I mean, who can resist having more cheese? I know I can't...

Step 5: Grill it!
Put them in the toaster oven and grill it for about 10-15min. I can't tell the exact time, but by agaration, can tell when it's cooked one la.

Step 6: Serve with sandwich bread and lettuce.
Just look at the glorious melted cheese... ooh~ But then, confession to be made, sandwich for sausages is not the most delicious thing. A hot dog bun, or better still my favourite kaiser rolls are better. And lettuce doesn't really go well with sausages, I don't know why either. Maybe it just goes better with greasy stuff.

But the sausage with the cheese was really good~ I need to buy more mozzerella blocks now!

Joan Cooked Sausages 2

As I had promised in Joan Cooked Sausages 1, there's a Joan Cooked Sausages 2! This is my Joanian creation called Baked Potato Mix. A very original recipe for baked potatos, with tomatoes, sausages and lots of mozzerella cheese.

How to make a yummy and well balanced yet easy to cook meal, just follow the easy cooking of Joan! Really, Joan makes cooking very easy~

Step 1: Buy the sausages.
Bratwurst sausages my parents bought for me because I can only eat pork because my wound. They bought 6 sausages, but obviously we won't be using that many.

Step 2: Open the packaging.
Erm, because we can't eat plastic bags? -_-" I just took this picture so that you can see the 6 thick and fat and juicy porky sausages.

Step 3: Pick out the number of sausages you want to use.
Two will be enough. Oh, this feeds two people, so don't you think that I ate all that myself. I know I'm a pig, but I'm not this indulgent.

Step 4: Wash them, slice them, dry them.
I wash them only because my mother makes me wash them, if cooking for myself I won't wash them, so geh gang. I sliced them circular this time because I had sliced them oval the last time, I have variations~ Drying them so that they won't spit.

Step 5: Grill them lightly in a little toaster oven.
Of course you can bake them or fry them or grill them, but to me toss them in the little multipurpose toaster oven is the easiest and fastest way to cook them thoroughly. haha~ Didn't I say that this is cooking made easy?

Step 6: Prepare the baking pan.
I always use aluminium foil over the baking pan because after that I don't have to wash the baking pan until so jialat. haha~ I'm lazy. Yup, butter it so the sides won't stick.

Step 7: Throw all the ingredients you want it.
I said it's a baked potato mix, but effectively you can bake whatever you want. My balanced diet just happens to consist of potatoes, tomatoes and sausages, one from each food group. I pan fried the sliced potatoes a bit first so I don't have to bake it for too long. I used cherry tomatoes, so I halved them first. And the sausages, the most important ingredient from the previous steps.

Step 8: Throw in the mozzerella cheese liberally.
Use sliced mozzerella instead of the shaved ones because the shaved ones contain more air than cheese. Just cover the whole pot with lots and lots of cheese.

Step 9: Bake it!
I baked it at about 200° for I don't know how long. Just bake it until the cheese is all melted and slightly browned then can remove it~

And then, tadah~

and it's ready to be served!

Okay, personally I think that I hadn't put enough cheese, and there's better to have a layer of parmesan in between the whole chunk of ingredients.

But it was still a very yummy yummy eat anyway.
I mean, just look at this...

Cheese!
Look at the cheesy sausage, then look at the cheesy sausage with potato, then look at the cheesy sausage with potato with tomato...
wahaha~

Delifrance

Sausage Feuillete from Delifrance which my parents tapau-ed for me from the Parkway branch. Price according to the webbie is $2.65.

This was one of the stuff my parents would tapau for me from petrol stations to snack on while I was growing up, then they stopped some time along the way because the petrol stations stopped stocking it. I was quite pleasantly surprised to see them tapau this back for me because it's been a long time since I had this, and my god, was it good~

Okay, to be fair, the sausage's a chicken hotdog, not too bad but lacked flavour. Much of this item's flavour comes from the pastry which was really good, a good combination of sweet and savoury, just the right kind of snack. But compared to other hotdog buns, this at $2.65 is a tad steep.

It's one enjoyable comfort food which I'd like to have more of in the undetermined future.

Hotdog USB Thumbdrive

My parents are going to Tokyo on Monday, and this is what I told my dad to get me from Akihabara. A hotdog USB thumbdrive, 1 GB big somemore.

Other than the hotdog one, there's cheeseburgers, pizzas, and sandwiches, the junk food series. You know the Japanese, they have the sushi and bento stuff, and now they want to enter the American market. But I'm not complaining though.

Other than getting this, I've asked my dad to help me find some miniature items from Japan, like plastic food. haha~ So hopefully they have junk food too among others sushi and stuff, hopefully he can get me some more hotdog stuff. grr... Why am I not the one going to Japan? And worse, I've a deadline on the day they are flying off. Poor me...

Aston's Specialities

Chicken and Sausage Combo Set with sides of mash potato and corn on the cob, at $10.50, from Aston's Specialities.

Hearing so much about Aston's and how value for money it is, I decided one day to join the snaking queue and have an early dinner on a weekend evening. Service was prompt, food ran out quickly, I wanted wedges but there weren't any left, no garlic bread either, but the rest of our food was decent. I had this chicken and sausage combo and shared a mushroom soup. For the chicken, I had it char-grilled. It was nice, but my only gripe is the generic gravy liberally drenched over both the chicken and the mash potato. I've something against generic sauces, I think it's because I haven't came across any really tasty generic sauce.

Anyway, this is a sausage blog, and the highlight of the day is the sausages. The sausages were surprising good. I wasn't expecting much since there weren't many sausage dishes from the menu, and when the food arrived, the little sausages looked pretty sad to me. For a moment I thought they came out from a can. But biting into one really packed a punch. They were really good. I can't tell if they used pork or chicken but my hunch is that it's pork, more precisely, smoked ham and/or bacon to give that rich and smokey flavour.

I also really liked the sausages that they were nicely charred on the skin. And at that price, it was really one good eat.

Werner's Oven

Thürlingen Cheese Sausage set with sides of Mash Potato and Wedges, $18.50 + 7% GST, from Werner's Oven.

Werner's Oven is this quaint little family restaurant which serves an authentic German fare, and that includes great German sausages, at a very reasonable price with no 10% service charge even though their service is seamlessly perfect. At least I was able to change the Sauerkraut to Wedges which is now becoming a norm for me at German restaurants.

Jasmine called me up the other day arranging for a time to go pigging out on sausages. I didn't immediately recall that it was her birthday, but luckily I remembered it in time not to sia suay myself. I didn't get her anything, so the dinner was on me. We both got the same cheese sausage dish, and we both traded the veggies for more carbs. And boy were they good~

The sausage was grilled so the juice was retained within the sausage, and as you can see from the picture, the cheese was also ballooning inside the sausage. And with every slit down the sausage, oozes out the cheese. And the sausage was so long and filling. The sausage was good enough on its own that I had only minimal mustard, which was a good thing becuase the mustard provided isn't too much. Maybe it's because the sausage is too good for mustard hence they didn't want ti serve too much mustard. haha~ The mash potato was really smooth and creamy and tasted so great on its own. I think it's a German thing for mash to come without sauce and I think it's great cos sauce would cover up the delectful taste of the mash. The wedges were normal, nice and comforting.

Here's to the birthday girl and our thick fat sausages.

I can't wait to go back to Werner's Oven for other stuff in the menu. There's quite a lot of cheap stuff like their chicken dishes which range below $10, and the pastas at about $12. The German fares range about $15-20, and considering that there's not 10% service charge, it's very value for money. They serve Paulaner's too, if that's another drawing point.

But what caught my eye was the bakery, okay, I know of the existence of their bakery, just that I just noticed a couple of really interesting stuff inside the bakery. Sausages! Their own sausages, going at 6 a pack for $21+, very value for money. And better still, I spotted Kaiser Rolls in their bakery! That's the best thing to go with yummy grilled sausages.

I need to head back to Werner's again soon.

NUS Arts Forum Bazaar Sausage Stall

Cheese sausage and black pepper sausage from the sausage stall at NUS Arts Forum. 1 for $1.50 2 for $2.50. I spied on their supplier and it says Master Butchery.

I think NUS students are being ripped off because I saw the same supplier at Clementi pasar malam two weeks ago and the sausages are $1 each. grr... But I'm still addicted to these sausages as they provide a yummy bite during boring lectures.

The black pepper sausages are very black peppery, which didn't go too well with me because it made my throat and nose feel warm and itchy. But the cheese ones are my favourites. There's a generous amount of cheese inside which oozes out with every bite. That's what makes a cheese sausage good. But the signature items from the stall are the prata wrapped sausages which I didn't try, maybe we can leave that for another time. haha~

Hotdog Cake

I saw this somewhere is the world wide web, and it's so so cool~
Want Fries With That Hotdog Cake?

The Hot Dog and Fries Cake is a completely edible, ridiculously sweet cake shaped to look like a hot dog in a bun and french fries. I bought the fried calamari and the beer battered fish and chips too, but those weren't pictured.

The most amazing thing about Chippy's is the amount of oil they use in their cooking. Everything is deep fried, the Mars bar, the fish and chips, the calamari, and even the sausage is deep fried. The whole sausage is dunked into the hot oil to sizzle and bubble and after it's cooked, drained, but not much oil is drained off. The only hope is for the oil to flow into the mash potato, because I don't eat the mash potato. No point wasting precious stomach space for pure carbohydrates.

Speaking of mash potato, Chippy's uses the Maggi one, same as the one 7-11 uses. Ya... It's also another turn off factor. I've a friend who always eats up my mash potato, and he said that the mash potato was good, better than the 7-11 ones, and I was like, erm... These are the same as the 7-11 ones. I guess food in different packaging tastes different. haha... Or maybe it's the sausage oil in the mash that makes it taste better? Anyway, it's become a running joke between us, everytime I ask him if he wants to eat mash potato it's sort of implying that I want to eat Chippy's cheese sausage.

Chippy's is one of the better cheese sausages I've had mainly because it's deep fried, also because it retains the cheese within the sausage. The only pity that I have is that the sausage is too short. Longer ones would be more indulgent.

Cold Storage Deli Counter

Bacon stick and Bratwurst sausage (sic) each $1.50 from Cold Storage Deli Counter, I was at the Parkway Branch, newly renovated.

Bratwurst means roasted sausage with brat-roast and wurst-sausage, so the name bratwurst sausage is repetitive, but that was how Cold Storage named it. I chose that because I was thinking of having something porky, if not I'd have gone for the Jumbo chicken sausage which I usually have. Without mustard, the porky and herbie taste was a tad too strong to the extent of a bit over, but I prefer the sausage skin of the bratwurst one to that of the chicken one, the skin of the chicken one is a bit too chewy.

Bacon sticks are one of my favourite kind of sausage to be eaten without mustard because I love bacon. Bacon is God's gift to his people. Look at the layers of roasted fat wrapped around the juicy sausage adding to the yummy factor. ooh... I took a bit in the picture to show the innards of the sausage, it's plain, no herbs, just the meat, but usually I'd just pop the whole little segment of sausage into my mouth.

Cheap and affordable great tasting sausages, comes with a microwavable bag for easy re-heating if you buy and bring back home to eat later.

Botak Jones

Smoked Turkey Hotdog set at $10 and a Jumbo Chicken Hotdog with Cheese set at $7.50 from Botak Jones the Ang Mo Kio Branch.

The crux of going to Botak Jones is always to visit at 4pm, and that's what I've always been doing, and that's the best time to enjoy the food because there's no one around to squeeze with you and the orders won't take forever to arrive, and wait staff are generally a lot friendlier.

I had the Jumbo Chicken Hotdog before, but haven't had it with cheese. Trying it out with cheese, I think perhaps plain one might be better. The cheese is too cheddary which doesn't taste that good with mustard, so a bit of a conflict there, but without the mustard, it's somewhat better though the over pungent cheddary taste is still there. I decided on the Smoked Turkey Hotdog because it's new, and I never had that before, and the whole point about this blog is to share new stuff. I think this might also be the first time I had turkey sausage in Singapore. The turkey one was a bit too smoked, I thought it tasted a bit sweet, but my friend who shared the dish with me (did you think I ate two hotdog sets myself???) thought it tasted too salty.

The redeeming point is that the hotdogs are huge, like long~ The turkey one was 9 inches long, the chicken one was a bit shorter but it was much fatter, so it evens up a bit. In all, unless you like really smoked stuff, or turkey, I think I'll be back for the chicken one, and something else I haven't tried before yet.

Beehoon for Breakfast

Beehoon with three chicken franks and an egg, the parents tapao-ed it back for me for breakfast, so price is unknown. Heck, I don't even know where they bought it from, but I'm sure you can get this at every hawker centre.

Some people eat to live, I live to eat, and I eat to indulge. This is the most classic example of me indulging in food I like. It doesn't have to be something eapensive, neither do I need to eat a great variety of food, I just like to eat a lot of the little circle of stuff I like. I was talking to a friend, and we concluded that this is the most classic example of me living in comforts, a very cosmopolitan way of life. Indulge in obsessions. haha~

The beehoon was stringy and not bad, the dry kind which I prefer, I don't like wet kinds of beehoon. The sausages were the normal chicken franks you get by the bulk for very cheap prices, but they were enough to feed my indulgences. Three was quite okay, though I think next time I'll ask for four instead, and just forget about the egg. haha~

I remember I used to buy those chicken franks from the Chinese snack stalls back in JC and the first few years of Uni. I'd get like two to four of them twice every day and eat during class. People are always amazed by the amount of sausages I can consume. erm... Not very glam, but I'm happy with my food can already~ It's cheap also, so I can eat loads more without damaging the purse.

Brotzeit

Currywurst $15.50, Weisswurst $14.50, Nürnberger $14.50 and Würstelplatte $29.90 all from Brotzeit at Vivocity. Prices not inclusive of taxes.

Of course I didn't eat all of them, I only had the Nürnberger, and I had it with wedges and mashed potatoes. I like it when restaurants make it a point to allow you to swap stuff you don't eat with stuff of similiar value that you prefer. Yup, I had the Sauerkraut swapped to wedges. For all my love for Germany, I can never come to like Sauerkraut, to me, it's just the German version of kiam chye, and if I don't like kiam chye I shouldn't be liking it by any other name.

The Nürnberger is made of coarse pork, so there's the strong pork taste to go with the herbs within. It's not bad on its own, but I thought it tasted nicer dipped with mustard. I tried the other sauces provided, the white one was a bit garlicky when isn't my taste at all, and the brown one tasted something close to German curry. Mustard is still the best.

I was at Brozeit with a couple of my German classmates, as you can read from the second half of this entry, and funnily as we all hadn't consciously realised, we all had sausage dishes. While the girls went for individual sausages, the guys when for the platters for two. I was quite tempted to go along with the guys and have the platter, but finally decided against it because I weighed myself earlier in the day and the scales reminded me that I shouldn't. bah~

I applaud the flexibily and the kind understanding of Brotzeit. Not only I managed to change my Sauerkraut to wedges, my Muslim friend had his whole sausage platter changed to a no-pork one. And when served, the wait staff remembered that the Sauerkraut had lard in it and immediately before any reaction from my friend had the Sauerkraut changed to wedges. That they were so willing to compromise to religious dietary habits of the customers won me over. I think I might be going back Brotzeit another one fine day and get the sausage platter too, but exercise that flexibility. haha~

I had an Apfelschorle to go with my meal and my god, I haven't had Apfelschorle since I left the land of bratwurst, beer and football. I must return to Brotzeit in the very near future!

NUS Bizad Canteen Western Stall

Pork sausage and cheese sausage from the Western stall at Bizad canteen in NUS, the pork sausage costs $1.50 and the cheese $1.90.

This is the second time reviewing this place in my blog, you can see the other entry here, but I returned there to have something else, the pork sausage.

The pork sausage is not as nice as the cheese sausage, being rather blame and tasteless. I think it's because there isn't mustard sauce. I think mustard sauce really brings out the sausagey taste of a sausage which other sauces are inadequate is this respect. Chilli and ketchup are big no nos in the sausage market, especially the German sausages, and there's no way I'm going to let the stall owner laddle his signature generic black pepper sauce over everything I eat. But the pork sausage redeems itself for being so long and juicy. Very indulgent.

The cheese sausage was, as usual, very good, though I find that the skin is a tad bit chewy but I'm not going to be picky on that. It makes me feel hungry just looking at these pictures tonight.

What can I do to make a hot dog taste better?

What can I do to make a hot dog taste better?
I saw this on Yahoo! main page and was instantly attracted to it, but looking at all the answers, I was very disappointed. This is mainly an American asking other Americans, or North Americans, what they think, and well, let's just say that Americans aren't the best connoisseurs in the world.

For one, I prefer the German type of sausages where the best ones are made using pork, so to the hell with those who say that the best are the all-beef types. *deh deh deh* The pork should be minced enough not to be coarse, but yet solid enough to have the munchy taste. Herbs should be added in liberally and consistently. The sausage skin should be thick enough to provide taste but not too thick that it becomes to chewy. The best kind of sausages should be caterpillar cut and well grilled, not too burnt, but need to have a bit of the burnt marks. Traditional German toppings are onions and mustard. Go with the mustard, it combines well with the pork and herbs, and no, no ketchup and no chilli sauce. Currywurst and its curry sauce is not like the curry sauce we are familiar with, it's not spicy at all. Sauerkraut is not a topping but a side dish, so no sauerkraut on top, and since I don't eat onions, I go plain with mustard. Cheese is also not a topping but a filling. Cheese sausages should have cheese inside the sausage and not on top of it.

Most Americans call for a soft hot dog bread to go with a hot dog, but in Germany, and how I'd like my bread to go with the sausage, is to have it with a kaiser roll. It's a crusty roll, with soft dough inside not unlike a french loaf but it's small and round like a rugby ball shape but it fits snugly in the palm. It's a pity we can't get that in Singapore, or at least no real nice ones. Either that or just have the sausage on its own!

Of course, one would need to think that he is enjoying the meal to actually enjoy it.

Joan Cooked Sausages 1

I'm titling this post as Joan Cooked Sausages 1 because I hope that there would be Joan Cooked Sausages 2, 3, 4 and many many more in the future. haha~

How to make a nice homely dinner of pork and sausages, just follow the easy cooking of Joan!

Step 1: Buy the sausages.
I like them thick and fat and made of pork, but you might have other preference. But seriously, can you imagine a sausage that's short and thin? That would be so no fun, isn't it?

Step 2: Slice up the sausages.
Depending if you like circular or slanted, just slice them whatever way you like them to be. Thickness also depending on your preference, mine was about 3/4 a centimetre sliced slanted.

Step 3: Marinade with secret recipe.
The reddish thingie and black specked thingie are not blood and gore, but a secret recipe marinade I used to flavour my sausages. erm... I can't tell you what it is but you can come up with your own secret recipe too!

Step 4: Fry them golden brown.
Just agarate, fry them till they look cooked. Depending on how hot your oil and how well a cook you are, the time taken for the sausages may vary. I didn't know how long I took, and since I'm not a good cook, then well, cook longer lor. Overcooking better than undercooking.

Step 5: Blot out the excess oil.
erm... This is an additional step so that this recipe can get the healthier choice triangle logo thingie. erm... If you like oil, or you are less conscious of your health, then this is optional la.

Step 6: Serve with other sides.
I've named this dish Maxipork, so I served the sausages with baked pork loins and tomatoes, bacon and eggs salad and macaroni and cheese. tadah~ All home cooked and easy preparation yummy porky goodness!

Dong Dae Mun

Par Jon Sausage Roll $2.50 and Korean Jumbo BBQ Sausage $2.40 from Dong Dae Mun, this was the Vivocity branch.

I've been in love with Dong Dae Mun ever since I first ate their jumbo sausage. I even did a blow by blow food review in my main blog to spread my love for Dong Dae Mun. Now that I've a specialised sausage blog, I need to feature Dong Dae Mun some time or another. And of course, I had to eat the jumbo sausage again. Yes, it's an excuse for me to eat more. But this time, I decided to be adventurous and try out something new too, the Par Jon Sausage Roll was it.

The sausage roll was an onion pancake wrapped around a sausage. It tasted like onion, cabbage and pancake with a tinge of sausage flavour even though there is quite a significant piece of sausage. erm... I hate onions. Okay, maybe it's just me, the sausage roll was a big no no to me. I didn't even finish it, I ate about 1/5 of it, then passed to my friend, then ate another two more mouths of it, and we still didn't finish it, but I picked out the sausage to bite on so as not to waste, but I did throw the rest of the pancake away.

The jumbo sausage on the other hand is a big yay! Fat, juicy, herbie, yummy.

Vivocity Food Republic Pick n Grill

German Sausage Set from Pick n Grill at Vivocity Food Republic, served here with fries, an egg, beans and salad, at $7.80.

This is the first time I ate this sausage set, but the second time I ate at that stall. The food is freshly cooked, so it has a certain standard, but as it's also a little stall in a larger context, and its specialities are, wait, what are its specialities? Anyway, it's a decent eat, but nothing to wow over me.

There are two types of sausages, one was pork the other was chicken, so there's a variety, not too bad. But having been to the land of sausages and beer, I'm not too convinced that this can be passed of as authentic German sausages. The only redeeming point about the sausages is that like those from Germany, they're high in the herb content, and this set of sausages did have quite aromatic herbs in them. The fries were great, which is quite a surprise. The egg was pretty nice, I like eggs too. I watched the cook cook the egg, he let the egg slowly cook so that it's not too runny and it's just nice. And as usual, I left the salad untouch, though I did try to eat a couple of cold beans.

I usually prefer pork sausages to chicken ones as it's clear from my tagline that real sausages are made of pork, but in this case, I prefer the chicken sausages to the pork ones. The first bite into the pork sausage, the meat was very fatty, but there was a strong taste of herbs. I tried the second bite with tartar sauce, bingo. Luckily I loitered around the stall for a while, and when the cook saw me rather reluctant to leave, he offered me some tartar sauce. I was actually looking for salt, but tartar was just the thing I needed in retrospect. The chicken was just as herbie as the pork sausage, but the meat was leaner and thus tastier than the pork one. I tried the chicken one both with and without the tartar sauce, but concluded that without tasted better.

There's another jumbo sausage set with mash potato offered, but I think I'll leave that for another day to try, yup, I'll return to this stall another time.

Sausage Attack

‘Just William jape’ lands boy, 12, in court for attack with sausage

A 12-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with assaulting a man with a sausage.

It was, the judge mused, like an episode from the Just William novels. Except that William was never hauled before a youth court at a cost to the taxpayer of £2,000 – and even he would have struggled to terrorise someone with a bite-sized snack.

The elderly victim was walking home from a pub in Wythenshawe, Manchester, when he became involved in an argument with the boy. Manchester Youth Court was told that the dispute got out of hand and the boy threw a cocktail sausage in anger, striking the man on the shoulder.

The court was not told whether the sausage was cooked, raw or frozen.

Adjourning the hearing, District Judge Tim Devas questioned why the case had been pursued and suggested that the Crown should reconsider. “I was brought up in the era of Just William,” he said. “You may not remember it, but this incident sounds similar.

“Clearly there are certain things that should be done with a 12-year-old, and you shoul-dn’t be bringing them into the court system unless it’s absolutely necessary.

“If he has done what was suggested, it is very bad behav-iour. But is it in the public interest to prosecute a 12-year-old boy who threw a sau-sage?”

Oliver Gardner, for the defence, said the move “beggars belief”. He added: “It’s crazy; they are criminalising children. Where is the discretion or logic on the police’s behalf when they charge a 12-year-old with assault with a cocktail sausage?

“It beggars belief that they have put this boy through the trauma of the criminal justice system, locking him up at the police station and then hauling him before the court. Where is the sense of such an exercise?”

Dianne Oliver, for the prosecution, said that she would take the case to her superiors to review the charge.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, denies assault. His mother, who sat next to him in court, said that he had been unable to sleep the night before his hearing. She added: “It’s an absolute joke, and I’m disgusted by it.” She said that he had been “worried sick that he would be sent to prison”.

Last November a judge criticised Alf Bridges, a retired 67-year-old labourer, for wasting court time by trying to retrieve the £1,200 he said he had spent wooing a woman who answered a lonely hearts advertisement. At the time, District Judge Ian Evans said: “I am not here to examine people’s private lives unless they raise any legal issues. This is one of the most misconceived cases I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. It should never have got here.”

In April a man charged with harassing his ex-wife after he sent her just two letters was cleared by a magistrate who criticised Crown lawyers for pursuing the case.

Just William’s way

“ Running for dear life, he dashed down the next street, leaving in his wake an elderly gentleman nursing his toe and cursing volubly. As he neared his gate, William again drew the pencil from his pocket and, still looking back down the road, and firing as he went, he rushed into his own gateway.

William’s father, who had stayed at home that day because of a bad headache and a touch of liver, picked himself up from the middle of a rhododendron bush and seized William by the back of his neck.

“You young ruffian,” he roared, “what do you mean by charging into me like that?”

William gently disengaged himself.

“I wasn’t chargin’, Father,” he said meekly.

“I was only jus’ comin’ in at the gate, same as other folks.

I jus’ wasn't looking jus’ the way you were coming, but I can't look all ways at once, cause . . .”

“Be quiet!” roared William’s father. Like the rest of the family, he dreaded William’s eloquence.

Source: extracted from Just William Goes to the Pictures

***

This is so cool, not only sausages are good for eating and snacking, they can also be used as attacking tools! haha~ In a naughtier sense, sausages can also do many other fun fun things, but this is a food blog, so I'm only going to write about the edible ones. Just ate some sausages today, so watch this space for more updates! Will edit the pics and put them up as soon as I've the time~

Breadtalk

Standard Sausage from Breadtalk which I bought from the AMK Hub branch for $1.30 per piece.

I don't like Breadtalk's stuff because there's this awful stale smell coming from the stall sort of like that puking-inducing smell coming from Pepper Lunch, though Breadtalk isn't as bad. There's too much bread to too little sausage content, and for $1.30 it's not really worth its price, but then again, it's about the standard price for all buns everywhere.

GoGo Franks

Cheese Balls from GoGo Franks at 5 for $2, 10 for $3.80, I've got the 10 pieces one here. This was bought from the AMK Hub branch, but there are many other branches littered around Singapore.

GoGo goes back a long way with me, I remember some years back when good quality sausages sold in sausage stands were still a novelty in Singapore. Other than the one at Chinatown, GoGo came into the picture with a stall at Takashimaya's Food Square. It was relatively affordable for good sausages, and the sausages were better than those in the market. However, as GoGo expanded with many other branches sprouting about Singapore, and with the introduction of other better and yummier sausage stands, it's sad to say GoGo is no longer one of my favoured sausage stands around.

But I still enjoy their cheese balls because they're cheap and bite sized and I can just pop them into my mouth for a quick snack. Unlike the other sausages which are grilled, the cheese balls are boiled, so it's somewhat less oily.

I usually pop the whole ball into my mouth, but for the sake of this blog, I bit the ball into half to showcase in insides of the ball and the supposed cheese oozing from within. Yup, there isn't much cheese, but you can still taste it if you pop the whole piece in your mouth and chew slowly.

NUS Bizad Canteen Western Stall

Cheese sausage from the Western stall at Bizad canteen in NUS, served here with honey roasted leg and pasta. $4.90, but the cheese sausage is only $1.90.

I start of my sausage blog with my very favourite sausages in Singapore, the ones at Bizad canteen. It's a shame that the best sausages in Singapore has to be found in a school canteen, but I'm glad that it is so because it means that the best sausages in Singapore are also the cheapest ones around.

What's so great about this sausage is that it is really long, long enough to make you feel good about eating it, but not too long to make you want to puke cheese after that. It's also fat, that makes it filled with enough pork and cheese, and this cheese sausage has one of the highest cheese content in sausages I've ever eaten. Best eaten as it is on its own, and eat it fresh off the grill!

I had it with the roasted leg which was decent with a strong aroma of herbs, and the generic pasta which the stall owner loves to douse it with a generous serving of the black pepper sauce which is not really that savoury.

The Sausage Blog

Hi all, this is the starting of my new blog. In this blog, I'll be more focused and will only talk about sausages, or anything that's stuffed into a tube and can be consumed that some people call sausages, some hotdogs, some bratwurst, or whatever. I'll write less and post more pictures, really nice looking pictures of the sausages and be less rambly.

The reason why I'm setting up this specialised blog is because I'm seeing more and more themed flogs, food blogs, popping up and around, and food is one of my biggest loves, and out of all the food, I really can survive on sausages alone for the rest of my life, even though I don't wish that would happen. Hence I decided to do up this blog and join the flogging community as a full fledged flogger.

I'll make use of this opportunity and source out all the sausages in the little island of Singapura, and I'll eat them all up. Of course, not before I take pictures of them in various angles, note down all the details about them, and post them up on this blog to highlight my little feat. This gives me a really good excuse to eat more sausages and make it part of a regular diet.

Watch this space!
